FAQ

What is Suspended Image?

Suspended Image is a slow, mail-based artwork that unfolds over the course of a year. Participants receive one exposed but unfixed cyanotype each quarter and complete the final step of the process at home. The work exists temporarily until it is fixed, making each piece a collaboration between artist and participant.

What is a cyanotype?

A cyanotype is a camera-less, sun-activated photograph. Paper is coated with a light-sensitive solution and exposed to UV light to create an image. The image becomes permanent only after it is rinsed in water. Until then, it remains light-sensitive and temporary.

Do I need experience with photography or printmaking?

No experience is required. Each mailing includes written instructions and a QR code linking to video instructions. The process is simple and accessible, even if you’ve never made a cyanotype before.

What will I receive?

Each quarter, you’ll receive:

  • One original, unfixed 8 × 10 cyanotype in a A light-safe sleeve and protective mailer
  • Instructions for fixing your cyanotype
  • A letter explaining the image and process
All materials are shipped directly to you.

When are the cyanotypes mailed?

Cyanotypes are mailed four times per year:

  • March
  • June
  • October
  • January

Mailing dates are fixed and announced in advance.

What happens if I sign up mid-year?

Subscriptions begin with the next scheduled quarterly mailing. Past mailings are not included. You will receive four cyanotypes over the course of the following year, starting with the next mailing.

How does billing work?

You may choose between quarterly or annual billing.

  • Quarterly subscriptions are billed once per quarter, prior to each mailing.
  • Annual subscriptions are billed once at the time of sign-up and include the next four quarterly mailings.

Can I cancel my subscription?

Yes. Subscriptions may be canceled at any time before the next billing cycle. Once a billing cycle has begun, that quarter’s mailing will still be sent.

What if I mess it up?

That’s okay. Variation, chance, and imperfection are part of the medium. Each print will be slightly different, and there is no single “correct” outcome.

If something happens to your print — whether it’s damaged in the mail, during handling, or by accident — I offer one free replacement per subscription year. This ensures you can still complete the work and enjoy the full experience.

How long does fixing the print take?

The fixing process is simple and typically takes about 10–15 minutes, plus drying time.

What does “light-safe” mean?

Until the print is fixed, it is sensitive to light. The cyanotype is shipped in a light-safe envelope to protect it. Please wait to open the envelope until you are ready to begin the process.

Is this a limited edition?

Yes. To keep the project manageable and intentional, subscriptions are capped. Once the current edition fills, enrollment will close.

Is this a print subscription?

No. Suspended Image is a time-based artwork rather than a traditional print club. Each piece is handmade, unfixed, and completed through participation.

Can I give this as a gift?

Yes. You’re welcome to purchase a subscription as a gift. Please include the recipient’s mailing address at checkout.

Do you ship internationally?

At this time, Suspended Image ships within the United States only.

Will past cyanotypes ever be available?

Possibly, but not guaranteed. Past works may be revisited in a different context or format in the future, but subscriptions move forward in time and do not include previous mailings.

Who is this project for?

This project is for people who are interested in process, slowness, participation, and analog photography — and who are comfortable with variation and impermanence.
